In an exclusive interview with India Today, historian and author Niall Ferguson said that China's AI development is lagging behind the US. Speaking to Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson and Executive Editor-In-Chief, India Today Group and Rahul Kanwal, India Today News Director, Niall Ferguson said, "I am not sure that it's right that China is keeping pace with the United States in artificial intelligence. The story of the last couple of years has been massive breakthroughs with large language models and generative AI, and that's all been done by US companies. The Chinese are far behind, and if you talk to people in Chinese tech, they'll admit that, and of course it doesn't help that they can't get access to the most sophisticated semiconductors because of US restrictions that essentially make it impossible for people to sell those semiconductors to China.
